Message from the Rebel Alliance

An interesting email hit my inbox this morning. Though not from the Rebel Alliance fighting against the Sith Lords.

No, some goon decided to mail me about his wonderful new political movement, possibly wanting me to join. He wrote about wanting a rebellion against the state. It's really cute.

His assumption is that everyone in Europe is suffering from technocratic governments that bog down in too many legal and technical details.

He goes on to detail the entire political system should be overthrown. Government officials lie and only work for their own self-interest. Globalisation is a bad thing and should be stopped. Entrepeneurs are evil, wages should have a maximum.

To make the world an Utopia™, this dear fellow has called into existence the "Rebel Alliance". This is where the fun begins.

Within the next ten years, they want to: Eliminate parliamentary democracy, and substitute it with a one party system, destroy the world economy by limiting free market economy, impose strict rules on companies, introducing a maximum wage limit, and introduce a direct democracy.

Now, as the demise of the ancient Greeks showed, direct democracy doesn't work when your population grows too large, like more then 4000 people. All his other cute points about wanting to make Europe a society of peace are completely irrelevant if you can't sustain an economy. His plans, if actually put forward, would fail miserably, simply because people won't  allow the restrictions. You can't limit ambition. It's a free world, it won't be with idiots like this one.

But hey, at least he gave me something to rant about!

Charl van Niekerk 22 Sep 2005 Oh my goodness, the fun will never stop!

I thought the "free" world should be about freedom, not about being limited in about, well, everything! :D

Hayo 22 Sep 2005 Yeah, hardcore anti-globalists often tend to forget that bit about freedom :D
